CHAMPS/Life Skills

Falcon Quest Program

In conjunction with the NCAA's CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success), the Falcon Quest Program was developed for the student-athletes at Bowling Green State University to not only make each of them a better student and athlete, but to prepare them for the biggest challenge of all - life after graduation. This program is committed to academic excellence and supports progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.

It is designed to build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs, support a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes while encouraging personal growth and decision-making skills in order to develop and pursue career and life goals. Falcon Quest has given BGSU student-athletes the opportunity to participate in a variety of programs emphasizing five key components: academics, athletics, personal development, career development and a commitment to service.

Falcon Quest activities include:

  • Guest speaker presentations to communicate with student-athletes about issues that affect college students
  • Workshops for student-athletes which deal with various issues including study skills, nutrition and career planning
  • Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) - Meetings between student-athletes, representing all 18 sports and Athletic Department administrators to discuss and plan programs
  • Falcon Quest Outreach (STAR and Pen Pal Programs)

Falcon Quest Outreach: STAR and Pen Pal Programs

The Falcon Quest STAR Program is a speaker's bureau that allows student-athletes to interact with youth in group settings. This program provides a 'formal' opportunity for student-athletes to visit area schools and civic groups to speak about topics that affect today's young people. Topics can include, but are not limited to: Say NO to Drugs and Alcohol, College Student-Athlete Life, Goal Setting, Peer Pressure, Staying in School, and many more.

    Highlights of the STAR Program:

  • Short-term/one time assignment - can give one (1) or more presentations
  • Voluntary workshops are available for those who want to practice and strengthen their presentation skills.
  • First-time speakers are welcome and encouraged to participate
  • Chance to share personal experiences and insight with youth groups

The Falcon Quest Pen Pal Program is designed to encourage BGSU student-athletes to connect with the children of area communities as a mentor and friend. Falcon Quest Pen Pal Program does this by pairing a school-age youth with a student-athlete. They engage in a more traditional sense of communication by exchanging personalized letters to each other at least once a month for a semester. Participating youth are also invited to the Bowling Green State University campus in the spring to meet and interact with their student-athlete pen pal.

Highlights of the Pen Pal Program:

  • On going - two (2) letters/month
  • Interact with elementary and middle school kids
  • Develop a friendship with pen pal
  • Mailing and delivery of letters handled by the Office of Student-Athlete Services

    Falcon Quest Community Service

Throughout the academic year, all 18 intercollegiate athletic teams participate in community service projects. Student-athletes have been involved with local organizations and projects such as Special Olympics, Adopt-A-Highway, Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods, Run/Walk for Diabetes, Children's Resource Center in Bowling Green and Toledo, Little League Clinic, Habitat for Humanity and Race for the Cure.
