On November 5, 2002, the Bowling Green State University women's soccer family suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Leslie Ann Dawley. Dawley, a freshman midfielder from Westerville (Thomas Worthington HS), collapsed early in the first half of a Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal match against Buffalo and passed away later that day. She was 18 years old.
At the request of Leslie's family, the Falcons and Bulls played their match the following day as a tribute to her memory.
Nov. 5, 2002, statement from BGSU Athletic Director Paul Krebs:
"It is with great sadness that we make this announcement. Leslie's mother and father, Greg and Wendy, were with her at the hospital and have returned home to be with their family. We appreciate the support extended to us from the University community during our time of sorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dawley family, her teammates, and our coaching staff."
Nov. 5, 2002, statement from BGSU Women's Soccer Coach Andy Richards:
"In light of today's tragic events, the game of soccer pales into insignificance. However, with the wishes of the Dawley family and the women's soccer program, we will honor the memory of Leslie Dawley by playing against Buffalo. Soccer is what brought Leslie to Bowling Green and, as hard as it is going to be to play that game, it is fitting to remember Leslie in the game she loves."
